What is a Barnes & Noble EAN?

Modified on Tue, 9 Jul, 2024 at 2:08 PM

Barnes & Noble doesn't use ISBNs to track ebooks. B&N uses their own internal stock numbers, called EANs. This is similar to how Amazon uses their own internal stock numbers (ASIN) or Apple uses Apple ID Numbers on their website. (Of note, Barnes & Noble DOES use ISBNs to track print books.)
  • If you have selected to distribute an ebook ONLY Barnes & Noble, you will not get an ISBN assigned to your ebook.
  • If you supply your own ISBN and one of your distribution choices is Barnes & Noble, your ISBN will not be visible on Barnes & Noble's website for your ebook.

All sales earned on ebooks are reported under the Book Title/Author Name, not the stock number (ISBN, EAN, ASIN, Apple ID), so there are no issues with sales not totaling for any of the lists (NYT's or USA Today) when vendors elect to use their own stock numbers.
