Why you shouldn't double-list your books.

Modified on Tue, 19 Mar, 2024 at 4:04 PM

Double listing refers to the practice of listing the same book multiple times through different services or platforms. This results in two (double) listings for one product.

Our vendors prohibit double-listing titles through multiple aggregate accounts.

All of the stores that sell our books have let us know that that practice causes customer confusion and complaints.

Buyers do not understand that the same book can be listed twice through different sources to the same site. Buyers assume that the second book is a sequel, Part 2, or updated edition of the book they previously bought, and upon downloading and finding out it's the same book, they may leave negative reviews. Our partner stores report frequent negative reviews, returned books, and requests for refunds for books that have more than 1 listing.

Consider also that double-listed books reduces a title's sales rank and may lead to a reduced number of sales and reduced discoverability. By splitting up your sales between two listings for the same product, you reduce your rankings. Having 10 sales split between two books (even though they are actually the same book, but submitted through two different sources) splits your ranks.

Splitting your rankings will further reduce your sales as your book moves down on the charts and decreases in visibility.

Overall, it's a no-win practice, and prohibited by the stores we currently offer.
