D2D can supply you with a free ISBN, or you can use one you have purchased in advance.
Your ISBN must be unique to your ebook or your D2D Print version of your book, meaning that ISBNs cannot be shared between titles, nor can you reuse an ISBN that has been used on another version of your book.
If you choose to use a free Draft2Digital provided ISBN, it does not give D2D any special power over your copyright or your book. Your copyright remains with you. Accepting an ISBN that Draft2Digital has paid for only means that you allow us to give you an ISBN to help with book identification and reporting of sales.
An ISBN from Draft2Digital can only be used when distributing through Draft2Digital. You may not use your D2D-provided ISBN at any other retailer or distributor.
Many authors choose to purchase their own ISBNs, if you would like to purchase ISBNs we encourage you to do so through the official Bowker website and not through any third-party vendors.
Do I need to buy a barcode or QR code to go with my ISBN?
No. Barcodes can be generated for free at many websites, including Draft2Digital's D2DPrint program, where we will generate and place your barcode on your print book cover on your behalf.
QR codes can similarly be generated for free through Canva's website and many others.
